Methods that conform to what search engines want in optimizing a website are called White Hat SEO.  We are not talking here about things that are actually legal or illegal.  But, if you know what you're doing, white hat SEO can get your site ranking higher and higher in the search engines.  Black Hat SEO can get your site banned. So it's just sensible to use White Hat SEO.

A website that conforms to the standards and rules set forth by the search engines and avoids optimization techniques that are against the rules or frowned upon by Google, Yahoo, MSN and so forth.

The opposite of a blacklist.  Some anti-spam programs require you to put email addresses on a white list before you can receive email from them.  This only causes problems when you forget to add someone to your white list and then wonder why they never write or why you never received an important message.
