sitemap
A sitemap is not, as one might suppose, a map that is on a web site.  A sitemap is a listing of all the pages that make up a particular web site.

One can have a sitemap that is a page of the site intended to be viewed by the site's visitors.  This page would be written in regular html and would be designed to look much like the rest of the web site.

Another type of sitemap, sometimes known as a Google sitemap, is a listing of all the pages of the site with special instructions to search engines.  This page is named sitemap.xml.  Once this page is created for a web site it can them be submitted to Google or Yahoo and will help ensure all the pages of your site get indexed.

To see a sample of a sitemap.xml file you can take a look at the sitemap for this web site.

This is a fairly new term and describes in general online technologies and practices which rely on visitor interaction and create a social network.  When users participate and publish content on a web site the site could be called a social media site.

This definition will become more clear with examples:

YouTube.com - Here visitors can not only view videos presented by others but can comment on those videos and present for viewing videos of their own.

Facebook.com and Twitter.com - Social networking sites where people can keep in touch with family and friends, upload videos and share information.

Blogs - Many blogs are set up so visitors can make comments and share their opinions.

Using social media to promote websites and market products and services.  One example of social media marketing is the ads you see when you go to YouTube.com.  Placing links to web sites on a blog, promoting one's services on Facebook are all ways to use social media and social networking for profit.
