A search engine is
simply a tool designed to search for information on the web. The
results of a search are provided in list form and usually consist of
web pages. However, the results can also contain maps, music
or video files or images.
The three important features of a search engine are crawling, indexing, and searching. A search engine crawler, also called a spider, roams the Internet following links finding web pages. These pages are then analyzed based fundamentally on meta-tags and content and stored in a database. When a user types a search into the search engine results are found in the data and displayed based on what that search engine deems is a quality, relevant page. The way the pages are analyzed and process by which the order of results is obtained is call the algorithm and is kept confidential by the search engines in order to try to avoid manipulation which could lessen the quality of results. Some popular search engines include Yahoo!, Google, MSN Live, Webcrawler (one of the first search engines), AltaVista and Ask. |

| search engine optimization (SEO) | |||
| Search engine optimization includes all the various things done by a website owner, webmaster, or search engine optimization firm to assist the search engines in finding and ranking all the pages in the site. Search engine optimization includes such things as meta-tags, internal linking, external linking, on-page optimization, article marketing, social media , content writing and press releases. With expert optimization, instead of tricking or fooling the search engines, you do all those things necessary to attract visitors and give each person who comes to the site a quality, interesting experience. Then (with a little luck) your site will start to appear for very popular and relevant searches. | |||

| search engine promotion | |||
| Search engine promotion is a phrase sometimes used to mean website promotion in the search engines. Anything done to and regarding a website to get it found more easily, displayed more prevalently in the search engines and directories is called website promotion or, less frequently, search engine promotion. Search engine optimization (SEO) falls under this category. | |||

The links placed on
the search engine pages and displayed on your computer screen as the
result of a search. Having the link to a website displayed on
the first place results for a highly relevant and often-searched
term can mean a great deal to search engine traffic and success for
that site. Search engines are constantly trying to find ways to ensure the search engine results shown for a search phrase are ranked in order of the highest quality and most relevant sites. |
