  ad
Short for advertisement.  An advertisement is any notice, poster or paid announcement designed to attract public attention and patronage.  Many different forms of advertising are available on the Internet including pay per click advertising such as Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing.  Other types of online advertising include banner advertising, pop-ups, ezines, classified ads, newsletters and paid email announcements.

Ads are a part of the overall process of marketing and promotion.

ad click
Also called an ad click-through.  A click-through lets you how many times your advertisement was clicked on for a particular campaign.  This is an important factor in any advertising campaign especially those where you pay for clicks.   Important points relative to this are the protecting against click fraud, ensuring the correct public is clicking on your advertisement, how long someone stays on your site after they have clicked and most importantly what is your return on investment for those clicks.

ad group
Any grouping of search terms into logical categories.  This term is normally used in reference to pay per click advertising campaigns such as those on Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing or MSN Live.  In order to more specifically target your public and increase both click-throughs and actual purchases or contacts an advertiser will group terms and write ads specifically for those keywords.

For instance let's say your advertising a health website.  You sell a wide variety of health oriented products including herbs, vitamins, specialized supplements for different physical conditions, exercise clothing, books, exercise equipment.

In order to better control the ad copy and spending on the various types of products being sold you can organize your terms into groups based on each product category.  What you spend per click in each group may vary depending on the sale price and profit margin of the items in that grouping.  Also the ad copy for selling herbs may be quite different that that for exercise equipment.  Another advantage of ad groups is the use of landing pages. You can point the keywords in a group to a specific relevant landing page.

ad impression
An ad impression occurs when that advertisement appears on a viewers screen.  One of the earliest forms of  paid Internet advertising, even before the pay per click model, was cost per impression (CPI).  The cost per impression model is used to calculate the cost and worth of pop-up advertisements, email campaigns, link purchases and web banners.  Paying for ad impressions alone (not to help calculate percentage of click-through) is most useful for branding.

In pay per click advertising the ad impression is used to calculate the click through rate of your ad to see how well it is 'pulling'.  As long as the ad is a true representation of what the visitor will find on your page then you are looking for a good click through rate (CTR) relative to ad impressions.

Adsense
Adsense is a Google advertiser program whereby website owners can display Google Adwords advertisements on their websites and gain revenue every time that ad is clicked on by one of their visitors.  Google Adsense gave rise to an Internet income model based on arbitraging the difference between the cost of Google Adwords clicks (or other website advertising) and Adsense revenue.  With recent changes in how much Google is paying for Adsense clicks this model is getting more difficult to work.  However, you can still see Adsense in full force on websites across the Internet.
